How far back can you go back through the carrier to get deleted messages and does it cost anything?

If you are in fact the contract holder, you can request access to all previous messages. Some carriers even have them available to you online. Others you will need to contact and request them, but it can be done.

This is actually covered in the sticky at the top of this forum about data recovery. There is no way to imminently retrieve them using a software tool, but the carriers do keep copies of every message sent and received for legal reasons.
