I have little to no idea of what to get, i will be using a laptop for school, media, gaming on the side (sc2 and the likes) and i was wondering would this be able to play sc2 on medium or higher settings?

I think the SC2 Requirements are referencing the desktop graphics cards.
And the Radeon Mobility HD 3870 isn't the nearly as powerful as the desktop model.

Acer Aspire AS7750G 17" notebook $680
Core i5 2410M(2.30GHz) CPU, 4GB RAM 640GB HDD 17.3" 1600x900 resolution LCD w/ AMD Radeon HD 6650M

Acer Aspire AS5750G 15" notebook $680
Core i5 2410M(2.30GHz) CPU, 4GB RAM 500GB HDD 15.6" 1366x768 LCD w/ GeForce GT 540M

^ concur, both them would be even better choices.
You are correct about the 3870 being a desktop GPU.
My point was to compare the model 6490M to desktop 3870

Added: I would prefer the Asus as it has a much better reliability rating than acer
