I don't see how streaming defeats the purpose of a bluray player. With bluray you get to watch HD content from an optical disk. With streaming you get to watch SD content over the internet, and have virtually unlimited selection. Bluray provides picture quality, and streaming provides selection.

Whether you have the bluray player or a computer stream video you still need to buy either a bluray player or computer, so I don't see how you are saving money. In fact, a computer usually costs quite a bit more than a PS3/bluray player so if anything you are spending more money.

Unless you are talking about using a computer you already have for streaming (your main computer), then I guess you could save some money there by using that for streaming and getting a cheaper bluray player. But then again, there are room/building constraints to this. Not everyone can run an HDMI cable from their computer in one room to their TV in another. Plus there are setup issues like managing the kb/m, monitor selection, etc. and can just end up being a pain.

The point is that the ps3 has a great bluray player and offers lots of value to people who just want one machine doing all there bluray/streaming/gaming in the living room. To get all that for $300 or whatever currency you use is quite a deal.

In that sense, you don't even "need" a bluray player... a DVD player will do just fine...

Features like browsing, High Definition content/Bluray playback, an all round multimedia player, gaming, Folding @Home etc... make it all worth the while...

So I specifically state that the player I have plays bluray which is exactly what I want it to do, and you say that 'High Definition content/Bluray playback' is a feature that I don't need even though it's exactly why I bought my player.

I'm tired of this discussion, it's just going around in circles. I'm happy with my player, it does exactly what I want it to do and I don't need the extra fluff. I bought my PS3 for the exclusive titles on it, which is the same reason I bought my Xbox, Wii, PSP, DS, and built my current PC. Console warriors are a plague on the internet, anyone who really cares about the games makes an effort to get all of the available platforms to be able to get any great game that comes out.

On the topic of extra features in a standalone bluray player, I don't feel that anything other than actually playing the content on the BRD is required. Streaming can be done by a PC which everyone here obviously has since it's an online forum, so can playback of media from USB devices. Sure, I understand that some people want a single device they can hook to their TV without dragging their PC into their living room and I appreciate that, but I do not appreciate my opinions being attacked and cheapened.

My original message to goonkergi was based on the fact that he specifically stated that he doesn't wish to purchase a PS3 as he has an xbox, but still wants blu-ray playback capabilities. Nothing more.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to Final Fantasy 13.

Because there gaming console does not play BR movies? MS has exclusive HD netflix (without a disc) and the Zune marketplace is fantastic. It seems adding a BR drive would be the shot in the foot.

I get what your saying and agree to a point. If I had no DVD player, no computer and no 360 the PS3 would be a great all in one package to hook to my TV at a good price. I doubt most people are in that situation though, owning a DVD player alone makes BR a luxury and not a necessity which lessens the "quite a deal" aspect.

The point he was making you don't "need" streaming any more than you "need" bluray. Both are things that you want, and completely up to what you value or think it is worth.

The point we have been trying to make is that just because you don't care about streaming on the PS3 doesn't mean other people do not. For everyone else who thinks that streaming ability is worthwhile....the ps3 is great, and therefore we compare the value of the PS3's bluray player to be around $200, not a $100 player as you suggested

Lastly, if you honestly don't want your opinions attacked....don't post them on the internet! No one here is attacking you, just your faulty logic that a $100 bluray player does the same thing the PS3's bluray player does.

uhh and FYI HDMI can go like 75 foot without the need of any sort of repeater or anything special and if you want it to be all fancy and stuff they make these great walplates its amazing but ya a computer will beat out the ps3 and a bluray player all in all i use my computer for all of it and i refuse to by anything made by a company that tries to make everything there way screw sony

I never said that a $100 bluray player does what a ps3's bluray player does.. lmao.. stop misinterpreting..

I said that a $100 bluray player is fine.. and for 1/3rd the price of a ps3, it does just 1/3 of what the ps3 is capable of doing...

Can your bluray player play any individual video file ? ie .avi, .mp4.. etc ? nope.. it only does bluray discs... so yes it's indeed fine for $100, but the way you said it, sounded like you're degrading the ps3 by saying that you can get a bluray player instead of the ps3 for 1/3 the price.. because you didn't mention what you're losing out..
