[citation][nom]The-Darkening[/nom]These things were free for years. I never saw an intrusive ad 10 years ago. Now it's like we surf ads with websites in them.[/citation]
yea, years ago webpages didn't take a few mb per page, and even than, many sites were funded through ads, just not the current ones. hell, even a long time ago i remember ads everywhere, just the ones like on toms where its blue and hovering over them is annoying or the eff you flash ads that take a whole page.
people will pay less for a static ad now and more for a flash ad, or ones that are annoying like the blue ones. sure, somethings were ad free, but they were also walled guardens or services.
remember hotmail, you got 20mb, could pay for more, and pop3 (i believe that's what its called) costed money to have. you got basic for free, but you were let in on the backs of people who payed money.
there is not a single site i go to besides 4chan, that operates in the red with no clear way to make money off the site itself.
fact is unless you have people willing to do donation drives, you need ads or need some kind of a subscriber system.
