YouTube won't play in the background anymore when I close the Google app

I updated my phone and now I can't keep YouTube open through Google

Not sure what you mean here by Google app, are you talking about the Chrome web browser? Need a bit more info here.

Chrome won't play youtube in the background anymore because they want you to have premium on the youtube app.
If on android, use Firefox. Start a video, then click home button and the pull down notification center and press play on the browser media player.
Similar goes for safari on iOS
