You should check the temps on CPU and GPU and see if they go to high when the issue appears.

Can you post full specs of your laptop, also you should monitor the temps while gaming for CPU and GPU which is a common problem in laptops, you can use something like HWMonitor.

I'm pretty sure you can, it would be like using a SSD through SATA II, totally worthless for such a GPU like a GTX 1070.

I think you will have huge bottleneck in thuderbolt 2, would be different if it was version 3 (40Gbps I think).

I have the same GPU but previous driver version, I've been reading through internet and it seems the new driver release is full of bugs, fps drops, etc. But in your case is specially weird, have you tried to install an older driver?
