You can run it as long as you want like a desktop without UPS. Or you can buy a Lap care battery and charger. Its actually good one, and mine is working for the last 2 years approx and gives similar backup to the hp original one. It only costed me 1200-1300 around i think . still working well...

The HP laptop will charge without objection from that adapter , but i sincere think it will damage the battery very soon , since my hp original battery died on me in 1 year , just by a few charges with dell adapters.
