So I'm getting a new gaming laptop and I thank I'm going with a alienware 15 with amplifier. But the only gaming laptops I've had are asus and msi. I like them and would get another from eather. But the amplifier seems like it will extend the laptops life for a year or 2 longer. So I was wondering is there a dockstation or external hookup for a desktop gpu like the amplifier for asus or msi? So I can connect it when I'm at home. I know msi has the shadow with its docking station but the laptop isn't as good as alienware, asus, or other msi laptops.

NOpe , no amplifiers for them . Also these amplifiers are not really value for money. Since Buying them + an external graphics cards = Buying a standalone top of the line laptop . You can get a laptop with a 980 at the same price and get full power in your laptop always, else leaving you with a weak gpu and a non portable huge box that will cost you more . desktop and mobile GPUs do not have much performance difference so the gains are not really significant.

Sorry but that is wrong. There is a significant difference between a the performance of a mobile gpu and a desktop gpu. For instance if you compare a GTX 980 to a GTX 980m, depending on the game, the desktop 980 is ~50% faster. The 980m is closer in performance to a desktop GTX 950.

The alienware 15 has a 980m so I'll have some time before I can't play games on it even on low setting. With the amplifier it would be cheaper to get a desktop graphics card then having to buy a new laptop to be able to play in a few years

Sorry but that is wrong too.

I am comparing GTA V FPS on ultra fullHD since that is the screen resolution for laptop. I know he can attach 4k .

Here are the gaming becnhmarks for 980 desktop:http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-970.146750.0.html
where you get 45 fps vs 35 fps for the M version. which is 28% faster . Ofcourse variation occurs but it lies between 20-30% (yup there are 20% difference case too) . NOT ~ 50% .
For Processors , the gains are slightly more significant and lies around 30-40% . We have reached an age of optimization and power efficiency and performance drops are not so huge as they once used to be.

If you are already buying a 980m version then my suggestion isn't really valid. The amplifier will better meet your requirements. As far as how long you will be able to use your laptop is a variable factor . Model gets outdated , service and repair becomes an issue. 4-5 years is the expected life . How long did you use your MSI and asus gaming laptops? Just want to know for information about their usage lifespan.

The msi lasted a year but that's only becomes of a fire at my dad's shop. But the asus I got in 09 and just this year has started giving me trouble. All tho I haven't gamed on it in a while. Thats when i got the msi. I know it wouldn't handel any new games even on low settings. That's why I'm looking for a new one been using my ps4 but it's just not the same.
