hello all,

My friend currently has her laptop that unfortunately decided to breath for the last time. She had an old Pentium and now wants to buy a new one. (Yes she does not want a full rig like me... She is not an hardcore gamer, please respect that...)

She said her max budget would be a 1000$ but less would be of course best.
She uses it for school, watching series and want to play some games on it for example the sims. She wants it if possible on the fast side of course, if possible... But what would you guys recommend? I am totally not in these scene myself, so I was wondering if any of you might have nice ideas?

Thank you in advance.

EDIT: SMALL DETAIL! She is currently in ARUBA so I am not sure if all with shipping will be as nice.

As just about every laptop vendor you can name doesn't actually "make" a laptop, you can get one custom built to your specifications and pay less, by "cutting out the middle man". So when you say "I never heard of Clevo, my answer would be "I bet ya never heard of the people who built your laptop either.

Quanta makes (among others) HP, Lenovo, Apple, Acer, Toshiba, Dell, Sony, Fujitsu and NEC
Compalmakes (among others) Acer, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo and HP/Compaq
Wistron (former manufacturing & design division of Acer) makes Dell, Acer, Lenovo and HP
Inventec makes Toshiba, HP, Dell and Lenovo

CLEVO is a large Taiwanese computer company specializing in laptops. While the Clevo brand name is perhaps not widely known, their products are re-branded and sold by known boutique brand OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)… notably Sager, VoodooPC, Falcon Northwest, Eurocom, etc. They are also considered (by whoever knows about notebooks) to design and manufacturer the best of the best notebooks in terms of superior build quality and innovative designs.

Established in 1983, as an ODM (Original Design Manufacturer), they sell barebones ranging from laptop to portable computing solutions for both AMD and Intel processors. Clevo is one of the world's most preferred ODM partners and markets their products in more than 50 countries, and have established service centers in the USA, Germany, Britain, China, and Taiwan.

On the cheaper side of things, there's an outstanding sale on Newegg Flash currently that offers 39% off a 15.6" HP laptop (Star Wars Edition, which I personally think is a plus, but may be a deal breaker for her). This is extremely inexpensive for what's offered, and seems to pass her requirements.

The CPU is a 6200u Skylake processor, which will preform great in games with 2 cores and a 2.8GHz boost clock. Unfortunately, with this CPU comes it's sub par built in graphics, Intel HD 520. This won't preform well in demanding Triple-A games, but will pull through in the Sims.

I chose this laptop because of its IPS display with stunning color accuracy, its ease of use, and the added features for the casual user (DVD Drive, Front-Facing camera, etc.).

Price: $489.99 off of $799.99

The answer really depends on your needs, not just your budget. I encourage you to check our Laptop Finder which steps you through several questions to help you:

That said, if portability is most important to you, the Dell XPS 13 is a great choice (it weighs 2.6 pounds, lasts nearly 12 hours on a charge and has a great screen). If you want to play games and don't mind something heavy, consider the Asus GL552. For the best keyboard and productivity experience, the Lenovo ThinkPad T460 is a great choice. And if you want something super dupe light with a good keyboard but middling battery life, consider the HP EliteBook Folio. We have reviews of all of those and more on laptopmag.com:
