$1000 Ultrabook

Jul 12, 2010
I am looking for a new thin and light laptop that I could use for school. However, all of the ultrabooks I have seen so far in the $1000 range come with horrible displays. I was wondering if anyone knows a good laptop for my requirements which are listed below. Thanks for the help!

1. What is your budget?
$1000 or less

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
14 inches - 15 inches

3. What screen resolution do you want?
1600x900 or above

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Portability is the priority

5. How much battery life do you need?
At least 6 hours, hopefully more

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
No heavy gaming (maybe a bit of LoL)

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
Mostly schoolwork and some video editing

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
750GB or more

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
At least 2 years

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

SONY VAIO S Series SVS15123CXB for $850. Core i5-3210m, Intel HD 4000, 15.5" IPS 1920x1080 screen, 6GB of RAM, 500GB HDD, 4.42lbs,

SONY VAIO S Series SVS15125CX for $950. Same as above, but has 8GB of RAM, nVidia GT 640m LE, 750GB HDD.

If I were to buy a laptop right now it would probably be the Sony 'cause it is pretty hard to find a 15"+ laptop with an IPS 1920x1080 resolution LCD screen weighing less than 5lbs and costing less than $1000.
