1060 vs 1070 laptop battery consumption

Would a laptop with identical specs, but a 1060 vs 1070 have better battery life? Or are they fed the same amount of power?

There is a power difference between the two, but how little might surprise you. The mobile 1060 has a power draw of around 75W and the 1070 around 115W. Actual battery life is going to depend on a number of factors, but in general, with all other factors being equal, the 1060 will give you better battery life.

The GTX 1060 has a TDP of 80 watts and the GTX 1070 has TDP 120 watts so the 1070m could drain 30% more power than the 1060. However you shouldn't gaming on a battery with either you should be plugged in.

Definitely won't be gaming on battery a lot, but maybe I'd want to pull it out for some party games with some friends, or watch a movie outside or something.

Well, in that case, I have a $25 fix for battery woes. It really works too! You can run at maximum performance for hours and use it in most places that you'd use a PC!

Yeah, that was kind of a joke... but really, a lot of people think they have to do things on battery when 20th century technology can alleviate that issue for them. It is just a little more of a hassle. However, it is a solution that lets you have your cake (1070) and eat it too (use it in places that you would normally be constricted by battery limitations).

When your are not gaming the laptop should use the ipgu anyway so it won't be using the gaming GPU so you should be fine that being said it still probably still use more power than a optimized media/office laptop but you should be able to watch a movie and maybe play a few webbased games if that is what your talking about on the battery for a few hours (though that depends on the size/cell of the battery).

Even then, on a laptop that is equipped with a 1060 or a 1070 you are going to be running a big 45W CPU. That will hurt battery life too. Most ultrabooks are running 15W or 7.5W chips that give amazing battery life. In the case of gaming laptops, you are going to be wasting battery just powering those extra cores.

... I wonder if there is a way to switch off cores when running on battery to save power...
