Hi guys,

I made a post here about 4 months ago (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/56048-6-speakers-music) about buying a 2.1 speaker system for around $1000. Now I am finally here in the US and have actually moved into the small room that I am going to put the speakers in (yay) and will hopefully soon realize my plans. The setup I thought would be good after astrallite's excellent advice was:

2x NHT Classic Two - http://www.amazon.com/NHT-N-2B-Classic-Speaker-Black/dp/B000BYM9MM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1274567724&sr=1-1

1x Elemental Designs - http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_138&products_id=892

1x Yamaha HTR-6240 - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001S2RDAY/sr=8-1-spell/qid=1274567157/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1274567157&sr=8-1-spell

Since then I have upgraded all the music on my computer from mp3s to lossless audio. I still wonder about a couple of things though - does anyone have a recommendation for a sound card with a digital output that can be connected to a laptop? I think that would definitely be necessary to justify the expense for these speakers. I looked at this Creative S1090 USB X-fi (http://tinyurl.com/36lwmg4). Also following actually moving in I realised two things - firstly, I will need some speaker stands. As it looks now, I would move my bed out a bit, put the satellite speakers there. So I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for some inexpensive, solid speaker stands (I can't use wall mounts) that are about 80cm to 1m high.

I also wonder about the subwoofer - my room is in no way optimal for speaker placement. This may change in later years though, so I'm still keen to invest in something worthwhile. But yeah, there is a lot of furniture. The subwoofer should preferably be diagonally opposite the listening point right? Ie as far as possible from where you're sitting, but also near a wall? Because there is one corner near me, and then there is one place in front of my wardrobe (would impede a bit with opening it but I don't really care) that is diagonally opposite. So I guess it would need to be in front of the wardrobe?

Thanks a lot for any helpful replies!

Hey, good to hear you got your system up and working. Does your laptop have hdmi out? You can use that for audio.

As far as stands goes, they are a bit hit and miss, but Sanus is generally well known for cost-effective designs. Tomshardware isn't the best forum for this, I would try Avsforum, Overclock.net, or maybe Hardforum as you may get more replies.

Yeah, my laptop does have HDMI out - so that will be sufficient?

I'll have a look at Sanus for speaker stands, and also make a post at one of those other forums.

Thanks for your help.
