2 main XP problems

ok so i formatted my hard drive and installed winxp final
installation went smooth until it started for the first time
when it got to the part that it should boot windows
screen goes blank
now if i boot in vga mode everything is well and dandy
but as soon as i change the resoloution from the minimum defaults
screen freezes
when i reeboot i gotta go back in vga mode jsut to enter winxp again
what is causing this?
downloaded the latest XP detonators and problem still occurs
changed the video card to an older 8mb trident blade 3d and video prob solved, but i wanna use my 32megger
this is what i tried so far in bios
fast writes off
agp 2x , 1x
set wait states for agp
set ram 2 cas 2.5
increase core and ddr voltage jus in case


problem 2: the sound for my soundcard gives little popping ounds, changed the slot and no change, downloaded latest XP drivers no change

i also installed the latest via 4 in 1's for XP
FYIany help appreciated

40gig ibm ata100 hdd
intel pro 10/100 network card
amd duron 900
usr 56k pci hardware modem
17" HP m70 monitor
any help appreciated.
p.s this is my second installation, first one did the same.

try turning off "irq for pci steering" in the standard pc from the device manager box whenever you can actually boot up. that helped solve my probs.
