I think something overlooked in any mobile application review/hype/whatever is if it needs an internet connection (I've handled having a smartphone for two years without a mobile internet connection), and also how much bandwidth will it eat through.
Some of the listed applications don't need it, of course, but others require one.

A smartphone without a mobile internet line...seriously what's the point....the whole idea of smartphone is information at your finger tips. No internet=no information. Smartphone don't takes up lots of data as long as you don't stream youtube crazy or download tons of junk apps you don't need. Basic data line is not very expensive. If you can afford to pay for a smartphone, you can afford to pay for a basic data line.

I stopped using WinAMP awhile ago. Maybe its been updated, but it always caused my phone to freeze up.

Avast! Mobile Security - I tried it out. It tripled or quadrupled the time it takes to boot up the phone, and I realized I can provide plenty of security on my own with plain old smart choices, so I dumped it. It is also not very friendly with Google's security features. If you have your gmail account, etc, text login codes to your phone, avast isn't very friendly to them. It was a must to remove this software.

I CANNOT believe you didn't include a free talking translator. I'm disabled and once in awhile I go to this Chinese place for massage. They can't speak a lick of English, so I just use the talking translator to communicate with them. It's one-way of course, but they know words like "yes" and "no".

I'd recommend poweramp over winamp from a stability standpoint. Winamp still has a log of bugs that cause crashing.

What fyrefite said is ridiculous. With WiFi everywhere and 3G\4G covering almost all of America, I don't think that should be consisted at all. If you have no data service, you're wasting tons of money buying one of those phones. Also, this list is full of useless apps, most being redundancies of superior stock apps. As an experienced Android user, it is obvious the author was trying to promote certain apps rather than give worthwhile advice to new Android users.

Also, I travel a lot in Europe, I'm not paying the equivalent of 4 bucks a meg, just to look up what 'onomatopoetic' means in the dictionary, and there doesn't happen to be wifi on that street corner I'm sitting by.

@firefyte: couldn't agree more. I had the original palm pilot back in the mid 90's, and figured out ways to carry copious amounts of info with me "offline." Dictionary, books, etc. Still doing it. Offline = you always have it, regardless of service.

What is an Android App? I take it, that it is not an Ipad App. But I'm mystified by this description. As an artist, I wish to purchase a drawing/painting app, and I'm totally confused the "Android" factor. I'd so appreciate an explanation.
