More info?)
I've been looking at this model, but some early pix have shown very high
noise at 800 and 1600. However, it may be due to a pre-production model
without the latest firmware. There's a discussion forum at www.dpreview.com
that has more info and the links.
I do find it rather odd that Olympus claims availability in December, and
still no "official" samples have been posted. In the past, for other
manufacturers, this has signaled one of two conditions: they're late, or the
samples aren't that good. Also, while they've allowed some sites, like
DPreview, to post a first-look, they haven't allowed them to post any sample
pix unless they're reduced size. Definite red flag in my book.
All that aside, the E-Volt has another problem. Competition. When compared
to the D70 and 20D, it seems to lose appeal. Not nearly as many lenses or
accessories, lower picture quality (if the posted pics are representative),
and it's not that much smaller than either the Nikon or the Canon. Also, the
Nikon and Canon may be safer long-term solutions. I'm not sure if the 4/3
system has enough traction to survive, given the competition, but there's
little doubt that Nikon and Canon will be around for a while.
I'm still waiting for samples from a production unit before I judge this
unit.
