The 740M is better according to http://www.notebookcheck.net/

Benchmarking score:
820M: 877
740M: 1150.5

Fire Strike Standard Graphics 1920x1080

I would suggest 820M bcus its newer, and might come with some newer technologies, but if you have higher needs, go with the 740M

But really, go with something more high end then that, like 850+

850M: 3086 In benchmarking.

Which specific laptops are you looking at? Judging by the spec you've provided, I suspect neither one is suitable for gaming.

The GT 740M is the better GPU, but only if you get the GDDR5 version. That said, you'll still only get average performance at best. Also remember that i5 processors in laptops aren't quad-core; they're dual-core with hyper-threading.

With DDR3 VRAM, you'll have to play on a low resolution to achieve 30 fps, assuming you want to play modern games. I appreciate you're on a budget, but I won't make a recommendation if the laptop's not fit for purpose.
