Here is my situation. I have a PC, a 4k Smart TV, and a Denon Receiver. My goal is to get 5.1 audio from my PC.

The HDMI out from my receiver is going to HDMI 1 on my TV. HDMI 1 is the only HDMI port that has ARC so I use that for 5.1 audio for Smart TV applications.

However, HDMI 5 on my TV is the only HDMI port that supports 4k @ 60 Hz (I do some gaming on the PC).

Will a simple optical cable from my TV to receiver support 5.1 audio when I am on input HDMI 5? I hope I explained that in a non-confusing way. Thanks for the help!

Just connect the PC to any HDMI on TV other than HDMI 1.
TV will be passing the sound from PC to receiver using ARC

Solution

I see. So audio from my TV will pass through ARC, even when my TV input isn't on HMDI 1?

If reciever is 4k@60hz capabile then connect PC to reciever, and receiver to HDMI 5 on TV, use optical out to be your audio output for smart tv functions
If reciever is not 4k@60hz capabile then connect PC to HDMI5 and use optical to reciever for 5.1.

that's the whole point of ARC - to allow TV conveniently use external audio system.

Great thanks for the info! I was under the impression that my TV had to be in HDMI 1 for the ARC to work.
