5555 to 4700?

I've got a 5555 that I've had for almost a year. I have the option to sell
my 5555 at a reasonable price and upgrade to the 4700. I'll have to spend
about $150 out of pocket to make this transaction happen.

The primary downside I see to this is the loss of 64mb RAM, and $150 of my
cash.

Thoughts?

I'm not familiar with the 4700. What's so good about it that it has half the
RAM, and yet costs $150 more and is considered an upgrade? You mentioned the
downside but not the upside.

Uh, it's the top of the line Ipaq. It has more non-vilotile file store, and
less ram. Good for more file space. It has a 4 inch vga screen. The
battery life stored is more than double the h5555. And in use it isn't bad
either. 625mhz processor. I have both and the hx4705 is by far the better
machine. It's also thinner and only gaining alittle bit in length. Only
down side is the thumb pad, but it's only a downside when you want to play
joypad intensive games. For for the sell. It's worth it.

I am in the same position but have decided to wait. I had a look at the
4700 but didnt feel it had enough to warrant the upgrade. And it doesnt
have the biometric security, which for me is almost a must have feature.
Perhaps if the 2700 had VGA I might have gone that way. The other side is
that the 5555 will decrease in resale value the longer I wait (and the more
devices come out)

Ryan,

The original post was my message...

I'm actually looking at making the purchase sometime this evening, your
opinion sounds like the best evaluation I've seen so far and is very much
appreciated!

What are your issues with the thumb pad?

I've not done much with the non-volatile memory on my 5555. I'm assuming I
can stash documents etc in nvm, can I install programs to it?

Is the connector the same on both units? I'll sell the docking port with the
5555 but I have a sync/charging cable that I bought for traveling with the
5555 that I'd like to keep using with the 4700.

Thanks for your input!

I have switched from 5550 to 4700, and having a lot less RAM, I had to
use the Ipaq file store (FLASH RAM or something like that) to install
programs to save RAM. I installed in the flash the programs I don't use
daily, because flash is slower than RAM, and it works well. It works
really well, I dare to say, because TomTom Navigator, which I installed
in flash, runs better that I was expecting from a flash memory. I have
kept in RAM the software I use everyday (today plugins and my time
tracking app). Also, try to keep in ram the files you modify everyday,
because flash tends to wear out and has a limited number of write
cycles.

Yes, it's the same. I have recycled a usb cable, a serial cable, and a
GPS that connects to the com port.

I am REALLY happy of my 4700, even if I would have liked 128 Mb of RAM
very much.

The touchpad is definitely NOT a gamer's choice. I had to abandon my
action games.

Ah, so you're the guy who needs biometric security! I was wondering who he
was.

I've ordered a controller that plugs into the universal connector. I'll let
you know how that works.

I had the 5550 and made the upgrade to the 4705. The screen is wonderful
and the wifi radio has better connectivity with my home wifi lan. I really
don't miss the extra 64mb of ram, as I have several 2gb microdrives (which I
also use with my Nikon D70 DSLR) and sd cards for my data storage needs.
The faster processor coupled with the wider memory bus does make a
difference when doing cpu intensive tasks like file searches and working
with graphics. I also bought the extended battery option. I have to admit
I am an hp fan as I also have the ipaq 6135 pocketpc phone too, although I
don't work for hp.
