Is it possible to unlock a 7970 to a 7970ghz edition like you could with a 6950-6970? I don't have a 7970 i was just wondering about this

They are exactly the same. The only difference is default clock speed programmed into BIOS and boost. Just overclock your 7970. 6950 and 6970 had some differences in silicon (some parts locked), while 7970 and 7970GHz ed. do not.

Then why do people buy the ghz edition at all if you can do something like that?

What I heard from articles and people, the HD 7970 Ghz edition uses better quality PCBs and Core clocks to 1 Ghz. Other than that, there's really no difference between HD 7970 and the HD 7970 Ghz edition.

They probably bin them, but there's nothing different between the original, pre-GHz edition and the GHz edition. I have two original 7970s that hit 1150 core at stock voltage and are on par with all the GHZ overclocked overvolts I've seen.

Exactly. Hardocp also did not find a GHz edition to be able to clock any higher than the regular one. Maybe there is a slightly higher chance that you may be able to hit higher clocks on GHz edition than on the regular one, but so far I haven't seen data conforming it. Original was clocked quite conservatively, so producers don't have to use higher quality silicon pieces except maybe for really bad ones.

All of the ghz editions I have worked with are based on the TX2 Tahiti. They are far and away better - and overclock a decent amount higher than a standard 7970, especially higher than the newer standard - revised PCB 7970's that are available.
