There are two basic tripods to consider. The first is the pan and tilt. These were the ones I always broke. In addition, I found their range of motion to be limited, and awkward. The alternative is to buy a set of legs, and then pick up a ball head separately. This is more expensive, but in my experience, a much wiser long term investment.

Yes, tripod is very important accessory of camera..
Mainly tripod come in 2 stuffs, carbon fiber which is perfect for travelling purpose and aluminum tripod. Both stuffs are quite sturdy.
If you want to purchase tripod for traveling purpose than, CF tripod is best because of its lightweight, and for studio purpose the aluminum tripod is best. Both are good and very nicely eliminate the motion blurs.
Perfect for still photography.

I shoot landscapes and this is an area where tripods are considered necessities. But I do not carry any tripod for three years, using bean bag instead. Quality of my photos was not degrade when I leave my tripod at home! But for portrait photographers, this is a completely different situation I guess...
