a dslr or pro camcorder (like xa20)

One advantage of a DSLR is the ability to have interchangeable lenses. To get a professional camcorder with interchangeable lenses and a lens you will have to go up a bit in price from the Canon XA20. However the XA20 does offer the option to use two XLR microphones to capture audio which is a critical part of capturing video and you could purchase additional attachment or converter or conversion lenses should you need one. I shoot with a Canon T4i and a Canon VIXIA HF G20 (neither of which is considered to be professional equipment) and have been pleased with quality of the video. I like the manual controls on both the DSLR and the camcorder. Personally, if my main purpose was shooting video I would go with a dedicated camcorder. Ultimately the decision is yours. If you have a camera/camcorder shop nearby I would suggest handling both and see which one you like best.

A DSLR for sure. With a camcorder you are stuck with one lens but with an DSLR you can always upgrade your lens. You will also be able to manually focus which is a huge plus when it comes to video ( i don't think camcorders have manual focus).

Manual focus availability depends on the camcorder. The Canon's I mentioned all have manual focus as well as control over aperture and shutter speed. The higher end professional camcorders do have the option for interchangeable lenses but they are quite exspensive. A DSLR can be a less expensive option depending on the model you purchase.
