I don't know much about the parts that make up headphones, and I can't seem to find out what this 'cover' is called so it could be called a "filter" for all I know. I bought these headphones over a year ago, and they seemed durable to me. However, a few months ago, one of the covers or whatever they're called became partially detached as shown in the album below. I don't know how it happened, I haven't been rough with these headphones. They may have fallen a couple feet once or twice but that's it. I don't recall being rough with these covers specifically, I never tried to poke through them or anything. I always make sure not to be unnecessarily rough with my electronics even though accidents can occasionally happen. There was no way I could reattach this cover using the glue that was left on it, it was impossible for me to try and tuck it back into where it was. It didn't cause any noticeable issues with the sound, so I just ignored it and hoped it wasn't going to be a problem. However, a few days ago the other cover broke too for some reason. After thinking about it more, I'm concerned about what these covers or filters actually do. I thought they might be there to keep debris out but now I'm paranoid that they're actually for some kind of hearing protection.

TL;DR Are those covers there for hearing protection or for some other important reason? Or should I just ignore them?
