AC charger problem with Toshiba A305

I have the same problem with my Toshiba A305. Using the battery works perfectly fine. But after i plugin the ac charger the system shuts down at random time, sometimes 10 secs or up to 1 minute. I can only charge the battery when turn off or when i am in the BIOS mode. Everything seems fine when in safe mode. Here's the list of what i have tried to solve the problem but still no success.

1. Clean the fan with compressed air. Fan now is completely clean and works fine as it was.
2. Replace thermal paste on the CPU. (I bought the expensive one..)
3. Update BIOS to the latest version.
4. Reinstall the system back to its out of the box configuration/default factory setting using it's recovery disk.
5. Tried, bios setting settings 1 by 1 disabling and enabling hoping 1 setting would be the solution. NO SUCCESS.
6. Adjusting the power modes in windows by the way my system is windows vista by default. NO SUCCESS.
7. Trying a newly bought charger.
8. Etc.. No Success.

Please help!!! anybody who has the same problem and has already found the solution. Thanks..

Strange issue indeed. It could be an issue with either that adapter itself or the battery. Unless you have spares laying around, your best bet may be to contact Toshiba support and see what they have to say about the matter.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be going to Toshiba Center this week if still i may not be able to solve this probleml. Hope they'll have the answer..

There is a good posibilty that the AC adaptor is starting to die. It should be rated at 19V @ approx 4 Amps. It is possible that the ac adaptor voltage is dropping off as the load current increases. That is at reduced required current (Laptop off) their is suffient voltage to charge the battery - But when attempting to power laptop the current draw is dropping the voltage to much which can cause wierd indications.

Case inpoint. My wife tried using an incrorrect ac adaptor with her netbook. It was rated at 12v @ 0.25 Amps (OUCH) - it would charge her battery (took longer), but would not power the Netbook. In her case with the battery charged the display would flash (dim/bright) when trying to power on with adaptor connected.

Recommend trying a known good ac adaptor. If none available, Go to a local store and ask if you can try on with the understanding that if it does solve the problem, you will buy it.

It is possible to verify this, But it involves using a DVM and splicing into the wires between the "Brick" and the Plug end.

While it's not a 100%, it is worth ruling out. Matching make/model is good, but not always a requirement (see General Info. The Toshiba A 205 6 cell uses the same charger that the Toshibia A305 with a 9 Cell battery uses.

Just some General info, Almost all laptops use a AC adaptor with around 19 VDC @ 4 amps. Reason is that they all tend to use a 10.9 -> 11.1 V li-ion battery. 3 cells in series (set). 2 sets in parallel for 6 cell and 3 sets in parallel for 9 cell. They are not all standard with the size of the plug Most , but not all are interchanable. The most common difference is in the "hole", the outside diameter is typically 5.5 mm. My toshiba AC adaptor would fit my wifes Asus netbox, however the hole was sligthly larger than the pin - so no workee.

i got same problem
took it apart and cleaned it and new thermal paste
re-installed windows
latest bios update

pc works great when not plugged in...
as soon as i plug in the charger, it will just shut off, sometimes i get a few minutes, sometimes i get 30 minutes
other times it just shuts off.
if the battery is at 100% and the charger is not plugged in, i have no probs whatsoever
the only way i got to re-install windows is becasue i used a copy i download that is only 101 mb
it installs in about 15 min...a regular windows takes about 40 min or so and without a charger my battery wont last that long.
so i found a small windows file and it installs perfect and it runs great..plug in charger and ..off she goes.

i thought it would be a overheating issue, i bought it today for 50.00
it has a 3.2ghz cpu so i thought that would run real hot anyways
but after i cleaned it it actually runs pretty cool

has anyone power jack on the laptop yet? maybe use a 3rd party one if there is one.
i did not even look for blown caps, has anyone checked that?
i was charging the battery while pc was running, it got to 42% and then started dropping.
when it got to 39% i shut it down and gonna let it charge while its off and see what happens.
it just ran for about 40 minutes plugged in, longest so far....maybe something good di happen when i cleaned it..not sure yet

ok, i have a little update for this
i left the laptop pluggedin charging over nite
i got 100% battery and it lasted about 1hr 30min or close
when it got down to 30% i plugged the charger in to charge the battery back up.
the charger was recongized but it will not charge the battery while the laptop is on. the battery keeps draining.
if i turn off the laptop. it charges just fine.
but the good news is, the laptop has not shut off randomly no since i have installed this new o.s.
i almost wonder if it is a issue with a microsoft file of some kind, because the windows im using now is a tweaked out version called ..windows xp perrformance edition 2009.
the only reason i installed it was because it takes about 15 min and i knew the battery would last that long.
with a regular version of windows, the pc shuts off at random times like described above.
im still messing with it and im hoping if i try a new charge things wil be ok.

I'm having the same issue with my A305-S6864, but still haven't got a clue.

Tried installing a bunch of OS, but none could fix it.

I really think it's a power management issue (probably AC adapter, as pointed out by RetiredChief).

Any help would be appreciated =D

My toshiba sat A300 is giving the same porblem when i use ac power or charger.
I bought new Charger but didn't make any diffence ...

after a clean windows 7 set up i change power option all to same as it is in Battery mode ..
but no use so don't think windows 7 has anything with that anymore.

Its geting a misterious problem ..

My suspect is its the over heatng cozing this problem of shut down bcoz
when i run the win7 in safe mood it donesn't shut down the laptop work with the charger on no problem. and i know safe mode has limited amonut of dirver ... so it might be a
os control ing issue...which shuts down the pc may be linked with overheating aswell.
i did try limit the pc power option tomake same as runs in battery in ac power but didn't work ...while runing in normal win7 with ac adaptar.
yesterday i take apart the laptop and try to ... Pull out the ATI redion card from mother board (its like a small add on card) hopeing that the laptop will run with the onboard intel graphix ...
but it didn't work .

NOW what if I use a new processor which takes lass watt then the core t5750 processor is a 35w .. if can change it to a core 2 P8400 which is 20w... but the bus speed is a concenr wheater the mobo suport it or not.

has any one have any idea.>

I've got the exact same problem!!
did you get to speak to someone? and how long have you had your Toshiba??
it took my toshiba satellite 5 months to start doing this it's soooo annoying
