I am trying to reinstall the software from the recovery discs because the laptop does not start and states no operating system is recognized.
The hard drive is not recognized in the process of reinstalling.
Is this a drive problem or a driver problem?
Does the drive need to be initialized?

Very much sounds as though your hard drive has died - you do have recovery discs so this might be a great time to invest in an SSD, depending on laptop age and value to you.
