acer laptop only boot up screen is black

When I boot up my laptop, the boot up screen is black, then It goes to the windows login page and It is visible. When I put an external monitor on it, I can see the boot up screen, it's only on the laptop that it's black.

Any ideals would be appreciated.

In all seriousness, if the machine works fine after logging into Windows then ignore it?

Can you get into the setup screens? Usually F8 early in the boot process?

I can when I use an external monitor. I would rather not use one though.
