Advice for minimal laptop

We need to get a WinTel computer for our store, both for specific web
browser requirements as well as some lightweight proprietary software
that's being forced on us. We'd like to get a laptop for several
reasons, including being able to lock it away, and being able to move it
about the store. We'd like to find something pretty cheap and minimal.

What it does need to do is run the latest version of IE, a PC card slot
for a WiFi card (already have, surplus), and must run XP, preferably one
that came loaded with XP.

So far, the cheapest things that seem prudent are clearance machines
from brands like HP/Compaq for $700 or a bit more. I wouldn't be
surprised if there were better choices, and if there are I'm sure you
guys would know them :)

You won't find a new laptop of any kind for much less than about $699 (I
have seen them rarely for $499, which is usually $1,000 with a $500
rebate, but anything under $699 is RARE).

I'd look for a used Toshiba 2805, that's very good Toshiba laptop based
on a Celeron 650 MHz to Pentium III 1GHz (there are almost a dozen
sub-variants depending on CPU, memory, disk drive, screen and other
options). You can get these starting in the $300 range, up to about
$600+. They all meet your needs, although I'd be inclined to avoid the
2805-S201, the "low end" of the 2805's, and the only one with a Celeron
instead of a Pentium III (also the only one with a 13" screen).

If you need something higher end, look for a Toshiba 1415, which also
came in a number of variants from 1.6 GHz to 2.0 GHz, you can get these
starting at about $500.

Here's an IBM refurb from PC Connection for $599. You'll have to get a little
more memory though.
http://shop.pcconnection.com/web/Shopping/Product.htm?catalog%5Fname=PCCGeneral&category%5Fname=&product%5Fid=4792691&variant%5Fid=&SearchLogID=%7B8D807838%2D0CCE%2D45D4%2DB9D9%2D02BCC478D5CE%7D

If the link doesn't work, go to www.pcconnection.com. Then notebooks, ibm, and
sort on low to high price.

Noise is a problem.

Cheap laptops have hot CPUs.

Pentium-M Centrino is the way to surf, work and see a DVD without
fan noise

In this case, noise is not an issue, ambient noise would drown out even
a desktop's fan. Most of the "traveling" this computer would do is from
work table to work table, to filing cabinet overnight. The reason we
would like a laptop rather than a desktop is to be able to move it from
table to table, as well as (and more importantly) be able to lock it in
the filing cabinet when not in use.

---

eg. recently (a week+ ago) Fry's Electronics Toshiba Satellite for

-------

Memorial day WILL be the hot buying days for this quarter, so if you
are looking to buy a new laptop at a great price, get up earlier, read
