Hello to all from Toms Hardware,

I have recently come across the opportunity to purchase an Asus G75VX for a great price. The only catch is that the GTX 670MX video card is not functioning.

Since I can not find much information through general searches, I would like to find out if anyone here on Toms knows if the GTX 670MX can be replaced with a standard GTX 670M, the latter being quite cheap, or would I need to purchase the GTX 670MX which seems to be more than double the price?

Lastly, I would also like to know in anyone's personal opinion if this is likely going to be a bigger effort than worth the hassle, or is this simply a 'pull out - put in' easy solution? I would need to import the card, unfortunately, as I cannot find them locally in Australia.

I have decent knowledge as far as hardware is concerned and I am comfortable replacing PC components. However, I have never worked on a laptop before, so I would like to know if I am getting myself into something a little difficult here?

Any answers appreciated.

Cheers,
des.

No wonder that Asus primarily focused on the innards of its G75VX. The Taiwanese company, for example, replaced the CPU. Rather than the Core i7-3610QM (2.3 - 3.3 GHz) a somewhat stronger Core i7-3630QM (2.4 - 3.4 GHz) takes care of impending calculations. However, the graphics card is more interesting. While the GeForce GTX 670M in the G75VW still originated from Nvidia's old Fermi generation, the GeForce GTX 670MX is based on the more efficient Kepler architecture. The smaller build (28 vs. 40 nm) is not unnoticed in power consumption and emissions.

I wouldn't risk it. Replacing laptop components (Besides the HDD and adding RAM) can have unfavorable results, which is why most people replace their laptop units instead of replacing laptop components. Knowledge of replacing laptop GPU's is limited so I wouldn't risk it and use that money towards a new ASUS or Lenovo Y50 (great price and performance).

Try asking here:

There is a specific forum section for the G55, G46, and G75 laptops. Just scroll down the page a ways.

Thanks for the response, Jason. I agree with what you say, and will only make this purchase if the seller accepts my offer, which is quite low to be honest.
