AF field Maxxum 7D

I have the Maxxum 7D and I have an old Vivitar 28-210 lens. When it is
attached to the body I can't choose the AF field and it doesn't matter in
which position the switch is. All the time I see the "checkerboard" on the
display and the middle filed is chosen. I can't change it. Is my body
broken, or my lens is broken, or my lens is to old to support this function?
I think the last case is correct...

I'm also thinking about purchasing a new wide angle lens. I don't have
enough money to purchase the super one, so I'm thinking about
Cosina/Vivitar/Phoenix (all makes similar) 19-35 f/3.5-4.5 lens. Will it
fully work with 7D (I mean the AF field)? Is it bad/good lens? What can I
expect?

What is the maximum aperture of the Vivitar lens at it's 'long end'? If
it is fairly small, the 7D will not be able to use the AF sensors beyond
the center one. I have an old Sigma 500mm with a maximum aperture of
f/7.2 that has this problem on my 7D, as it did with all my previous
film Maxxums as well. My new 'Bigma' 50-500 with a maximum aperture (at
500mm) of f/6.3 ~is~ able to use all the AF sensors, however.

The lens is 28-210 f/4.3-6.7. It makes sense. But, I can't switch the AF to
ather than "checkerboard". AF lock works, but there is the third position
and it doesn't work. Is this situation with your lens too?

With the old Sigma, yes - the camera "knows" it can't use the outside
sensors, so it doesn't even offer the choice to let you try. With the
slow lenses, even in the "[ ] (use all AF sensors)" mode on the 7D, it
displays the checkerboard with only the center square filled to tell you
that's all it can use.
