Solved! All USB ports on laptop connecting and disconnecting repeatedly

Hi guys.

I have a HP Probook 650 G1 running Windows 10. It has always been unreliable when it comes to the USB ports. A few weeks ago though, it suddenly got a lot worse. All the USB ports will connect, disconnect and reconnect in the period of a second or two, repeatedly. None of them are useable.

I've tried reinstalling the drivers, disabling USB 3, enabling and disabling the power option that allows turn them off.

One repair place I asked, said the motherboard could be toast, which I really hope isn't the case.

If it doesn't, you have already tried what I would suggest, so then I would have it looked at by a tech. However, you may want to get a second opinion before having the motherboard replaced.

Thanks for your reply! I ran it, and it didn't diagnose anything, but something new happened in the process. After I ran it twice with no diagnosis, I connected up my phone via USB, so that it would be connecting and disconnecting while the tool ran.

I also had Device Manager open, and although tool didn't diagnose anything with the USB connected, Device Manager is now constantly refreshing itself every second or two.

That is extremely odd. Unless there is something on the device that is making it act up (virus, malware, etc.) then I would do as suggested before and have it looked at by another tech and see if they also recommend the motherboard be replaced.
