I wouldn't read too much into this release date. Just seems Amazon believes the PS Vita will be released before the end of the year, but not specifically on 12/31.

A December 31st release date means that the retailer doesn't know when it will be out, other than it will be out after Christmas.

this is the truth. most companies will default the release date to jan 1st or dec 31st if they do not know the actually preorder date, only so they can have it listed up for preorder
