i shop at both amazon and new egg and ocasionally other web stores, for comptuer parts , it's new egg all teh wal , they got the best overall pricing and shipping. however Amazon is the shit when it comes to ordering books , games , and movies online (when i want physical copies) if i'm going digital games i shop steam. should i be blasteed for stated my opinon is that all three are great places to shop ??? It's good business for Amazon. In a way, its reminiscent of the console business - they sell the hardware at below cost, but make it up in game purchases and such. Amazon is doing the same thing.

[citation][nom]flybri[/nom]Thank god one company finally woke up. I've been saying this for god knows how long -- To compte with Apple and have a chance at taking away any significant marketshare, you have to compete with Apple on cost. To do this requires that you start selling your hardware at a loss in the beginning...that's the only way. Once you build up enough market share, in the future you will be able to sell them at a profit. That's how it is. I can't believe how dumb all these other companies are. The head of the tablet division of a company needs to go to the CEO and say "To compete with Apple we have to sell our first tablet(s) at a loss to gain market share and compete with Apple. If you aren't comfortable with this, then we shouldn't be making tablets that try to compete with the iPad"[/citation]

AMEN to this , like Zingam above you said these things are "toys" maybe even more toy like than a console (imo) and should be priced acoordingly. amazon's price much more inline with what most consumers would be willign to fork over for a gadget toy. me personally i don't feel like biting at even 200 bucks , but i'm certainly itnerested in one of their E-ink kindles sure not as much functionality , but reading is all i'd care to use a pad for any way. , I dont play gmaes or watch movies on long trips , i sleep. I don't care to play gmaes at hoem on a pad , i got PC and xbox 360 for that. For TV i got a 42 inch LG at hoem so don't neeed a pad for that , if i want to browse the web , i got my pc . and the good ol' house phone is still quite handy at making calls even to cell phones and it's service never drops. Last but not elast , i seriously doubt any of these tablets will be able to run even the simpliest program i use in school ( game art design major).

so there you have it , while i think the lower price makes this intriqueing even to me , i still see no need for a tablet beyound repalcing my massive book collection , and even then i dobut i can replace every book i own on kindle . but for me i'm mroe interested in the basic e-ink kindle that got reduced to 60 bucks (or was it 70 ?) , but even that i dont have the money for at the moment

[citation][nom]sod@sadcom[/nom]Below cost my butt... You mean below RRP. They still make money, it just registers as a loss against the RRP.[/citation]

So true , i used to work at walmart and once the manager left her work sheets in the break room , did you know walmart only pays 25 cents fo those t-shirts' they sell at 10.00 dollars ?
that not counting shipoping , stocking and general labor cost , but still it's freaking rediculous
shirt's are made in china so the cost of the shirt cant be that much labor wise , sicne the factory prouces x ammount in one hour then you got to figure in teh stockers money , msot stockers make 8-9 bucks and hour here in the US , but it only takes 1 minute if that to stock a shirt , so really i'd guess total cost of one shirt would be 50-maybe 60 cents against thier price of 10 dollars.

electronics are teh same case , buisness is teh same case , you make a product as cheap as it can be made (via supporting underpaid workers ) and sell it at 300-600 X times profit margins

the ugly truth is buisness controls inflation and it has to DO jack shit with what workers are paid, throw in some lobby-ed out politicians that'll do crap like freeze minimum wage while inflation increases and you got the economic state we are in now - The rich get richer and the poor get poorer , and as history has proven this state of affair's can't substain it's self forever, because eventually no one will be able to afford any thing let alone a luxury item that's what
happened in 1930's and it'll happen again.

Sorry sorry end rant now :p

It's actually a very VERY good idea. Think about it. Amazon sells the tablet for a loss of like $10 on each one. What do you need to buy to make use of it? And where do you need to buy it from? You need apps, books, music, and movies which are provided for small nominal fees from Amazon. They will break even very quickly and after that is proffit.... IN OTHER WORDS!

1. Make Tablet
2. Sell it for a loss
3. ????
4. Profit!
And Amazon figured out the ??? part.

Not a revolutionary concept. Video game console makers have been doing this for many years. Sell the hardware at a loss since the profit is all in the content and accessories.
