Depending on what display you're using some ambient lighting behind the TV works well. For example: http://lightpack.tv/. This tech has been around for awhile and people are slowly discovering that it can give you a better picture. I sure noticed a difference.

IF you have a plasma TV you want it dark. I use some lights with a dimmer to adjust the light in the room. If you have a problem with light leaking in the room like kanewolf suggested, heavy dark curtains work well.

We really need some more info to give a better response.

Do you already have good control of ambient light (curtains, etc)? The best recommendations I have seen have been to light the wall behind the TV to keep the contrast level between ambient and the TV to a reasonable level. This could be done with track lights from the ceiling.
