This makes no sense as who doesn't relize that MS will have a new system out in 2011 at the LATEST? PS3 can be like the PS2, still selling to the pepole left behind whle rest of the world moves on with the newest technology...

[citation][nom]shakari[/nom]Nintendo have done an amazing job with the wii. If you cant recognise that then your the one who needs to get out from under the rock. The wii is the most technicaly inferior to both the ps3 and xbox360, yet it is on top at the moment. The wii is basicly running on 10year old technology, sure you might think that the control is a gimic, but its a really really fun gimic that 10's of millions of people really enjoy. Hard core gaming isnt were its at, as nintendo have proved that this generation. There is of course one other platform which everyone so far has over looked, and thats the PC, its still going strong after how many years?![/citation]
Fun gimmick? I disagree, both in principle, and also because the statement is a paradox in itself. Gimmick, by definition, isn't sustainable fun.

Nintendo's system is severely bogged down by shovelware. All of my friends are now selling off their Nintendo Wii in favor of PS3 and/or 360 because the games just don't interest them.

Hardcore gaming IS where it's at because the average age of gamers is rising. More and more kids are growing up around hardcore video games, and they'll only stick around if the games are deep and very involving (aka hardcore). My twelve year old brother outgrew his Nintendo Wii because he just isn't interested anymore, and keeps clamoring for a PS3. Nintendo went for the short-term gains so that they could attract the old/non-gaming crowd who never grew up around games back in the day. These older folks now play the simple games a lot of other 'hardcore' gamers played when they were young (Wii tennis = pong with motion detection). I'm in my twenties, but even fifty years down the road, I'll still see myself playing hardcore consoles and/or PC. Why? 'Cause those games provide more mental stimulation than wiggling my arm at the screen.

A gimmick console that shovels out mini-games bundles every week with motion-detection tacked on isn't something that will keep the general population interested in the future. Within several decades, there will not be a single grandpa/grandma who don't know how to power on a TV, because everyone will have grown up around complex electronics. If Nintendo doesn't re-focus, they're fvcked.

You guys who think the game developers still haven't figured how to put a neutered 7800GS (Specs look about the same as a 7600GT) and X1900 to full use sure don't have much faith. I mean come on! "just starting to hit its stride". They are ancient now! Back in 2005 the hardware was still middle of the road!

PS3 does have more CPU horsepower than the Xbox but how does that matter for gaming?
Try gaming on a core I7 system overclocked to whatever you want, lets say god has blessed you with his personal golden chip and an infinite supply of liquid nitrogen so you hit 10ghz. If there is a 7600GT in the thing your graphics are going to be the same as if you had a crusty ol P4 in the thing.

If the PS3 pulls ahead of the XboX it will be purely because of the games released OR people who already have an Xbox buying a PS3 in addition to it.

[citation][nom]manos[/nom]Were you born that way or you had the accident on the way?Blue ray is the reason the PS3 has suffered as a console neither it has offered anything in gaming so far ( except huge ammounts of HD videos in FFXIII ). In gaming it only offers extra installations, longer loading times and so far nothing but worst graphically. What do you mean by once you go BR you dont go back? Do you stick it in it? You gotta stop watching American-pie like movies. And PS3 controller is best by far? google which got awarded and which is the one that copied another in this gen consoles..Being stupid is excused cause its not someone's choice but being an ignorant isnt easily tolerated in life. tc[/citation]

While it may be holding it back now (unlikely). It will allow it to continue into the future. If you have played MGS4, at about 3/4 the way through the game, they are like "Time to switch discs....o wait its on blu-ray nevermind" (I thought it was pretty damn funny) With equal amounts of data this will be the norm if you use DVD's.

it looks that way. last year xbox sales had a wider gap in sales but the first of this year the xbox and PS3 sales and user base gap is almost neck in neck. but if PS3 does pass the xbox than this will be a total embarrassment to Microsoft having had a secure hold against them this gen. from how bad the xbox is hardware wise i was always shocked that it had a commanding lead all these years.

Technology wise all current consoles are out of date at the moment 100 core cpu have been made and it is possible to create a 200 core cpu.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/26/tileras-100-core-tile-gx-processor-wont-boil-the-oceans-will/

Also 12 core cpu's are out from amd although not cheap more for server use:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-TYAN-AMD-OPTERON-6174-G34-48-CORE-MAGNY-COURS-/270529337772

And gpu's have gained so much power that a cutting edge console would not have problem with true 1080p graphics.

That's a tough one but I see Xbox falling behind and Wii does not appear to be falling off the chart although they seem to be stagnant in their handheld market which is not smart. Remember the N64 and Gamecube? Those only existed for shelf space. The Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance were floating that whole franchise.

This really has nothnig to do with technical specs or which platform will last the longest. Its not somethnig you can state as it will all change as soon as the first one of the big three shows their hand and announces a new console.

Then the other two will have to announce what they plan too.

I reckon that will be within the next two years.

Forget another 5.

Well I have 3 teenagers and I bought 3 Xbox 360's originally. When the WII and PS3 came out I asked them which one did they want they opted for the WII so I bought that. A year later they play maybe 1 or 2 games on the WII and play almost non-stop on the 360, get online with friends, etc etc. This past Xmas I offered to buy them a PS3 for Xmas they pretty much told me save my money they would rather have me buy more Xbox 360 games. So far this year most of thier friends have given away thier WII consoles and several friends who have PS3's play more 360 because of the LIVE community and they can talk with thier friends online while different games or playing games together. So while the PS3 may eventually outsell the other 2 consoles it will only be because Sony has to sell it longer in order to recoup their investment. Teenagers seem to be opting more for the social interactions and community as well as there is a huge library of relatively decent games.

Exactly, Sony will continue to 'flog a dead horse' with the PS3 as a cut down option along side the PS4 long after MS and Nintendo have released their next offerings too.

I certainly dont want to be running a PS3/Wii or 360 as my main console into 2015.

They all look a bit long in the tooth already.

I reckon MS will be first to announce.

Cell does rendering as well. Its not just a CPU because its SPU's allow for it to render just like a GPU thats why it matters. Core i7 would be a terrible renderer hence why we have GPU's to offset CPU's in the PC world. Cell is a different beast, it has a PPU and SPU's which make it a hybrid chip that can both render and crunch depending on what the developer wants.

I own a 360, PS3, and mid-range gaming PC (HD 5770, quad core CPU). My console preference has been the 360 simply b/c I have owned it longer and have many more games on it. I have had RROD 1 time, no issue getting it replaced of course. However, I'm very impressed by the PS3 and primarily use it as a blu-ray player (only own Uncharted 2 and soon will own GOW 3).

It seems people sleep on the game attachment ratio for these consoles. The Wii pushes first party games by the millions and we know which titles I am speaking of. The PS3 is a mixed bag as many people like me use it for movies more than gaming. However, game sells are starting to really pick up on the PS3. The 360 has a strong software attachment ratio and that is what makes console makers money. The PS3 can outsell everyone, but from a business perspective, they need to continue to sell more games. Worldwide, I do see the PS3 winning this generation, especially with the blu-ray argument. I still see physical media going away in favor of digital distribution via the net to win out eventually (that could be 10 years from now at this point, lol).

For the record, I prefer gaming on my PC (and I use the 360 for PC controller on non-keyboard-friendly games)

Who cares what's around in 2015? Both the consoles are incredibly dated and are holding gaming back. I really really hope we've got something new soon. I'm tired of this generation of consoles. I want more power and better graphics.

Arguing over the spec of the PS3 and the 360 is now like arguing over 1960's muscle car factory specs. Pretty irrelevant now.

Both are obselete. 2004/5 (when their hardware specs would have been set) was a long time ago.

It's now 4 years or more since this generation arrived and to be honest I've yet to see anything on either platform thats truly impressed me.

If the Cell processor is so powerful then why does it have to use three of its processing units just to convert DSD audio into 176KHz PCM audio? This task hardly requires any processing power. Any Intel Core 2 processor could do this task on its own and still have enough processing power to display 1080p video without any stuttering.

"Any Intel Core 2 processor could do this task on its own and still have enough processing power to display 1080p video without any stuttering. "

I dont know about that...certain 1080p torture tests like a "300" clip I downloaded, or 1080i results from the hd-pvr box would tax even the fastest C2D, you would probably need a tri-core or quad to do that and the audio conversion. Also, bear in mind that nowadays cpu usage appears lower because of nvidia/ati/intel using the gpu to transparently accelerate decoding of H.264 sources.

I really love my PS3... let's face it, it's not about XBOX vs PS3, it's about "Are you happy with what you bought?". To answer that question, I would answer, "100% happy". However, it's possible if I buy an xbox 360 I would answer the same way. Honestly, both PS3 and Xbos 360 are good consoles... however, up to this point, I'd have to give the victory to Xbox for games, and Sony for home entertainment console.

I guess it depends on how you define "WIN"... I think Sony is planning to push the PS3 for several more years. I would not be surprised at all to see the next Generation Xbox hit shelves in 2012 or 2013. I own both Systems right now and they both have their strengths and weaknesses. The PS3 is FINALLY starting to get some good games. It also has a lot of utility value. BUT>.. I still prefer the Xbox... online games are leagues better. And I greatly prefer the controller as well.
