OP: Sorry about the back and forth, but honestly THEY ARE WRONG and I provided LEGITIMATE places YOU can read for YOURSELF on the truth then some 'anonymous posts' on a forum.

In summary: IF you lock your car, lock your house, don't hand your ATM card to anyone who asks for it, then why wouldn't you install AV to protect your PC? You don't know WHEN your car will be stolen, your house ransacked, your money stolen with your ATM card; but you KNOW IT WILL HAPPEN IF you don't do those things to secure them. Just don't be stupid online and you will be fine. Use common sense don't pirate stuff or watch porn download keygens or other shit like that. MS security essentials will protect you from some stuff as well.

Hope this helps :)

http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/10/meet-badbios-the-mysterious-mac-and-pc-malware-that-jumps-airgaps/

And so on ALL NOTHING TO DO WITH PORN OR PIRATING and note the last two don't even need the Internet to cause a infection! AND infects "other than Windows" machines.

If you lock your car door when you park it, if you lock your front door when you sleep at night, why would you NOT lock your PC when connected to the Internet?

So I am sorry I am totally opposite to these others here for MANY reasons over the past 20 years. First off, your computer doesnt' just 'go to steam' and that is NAIVE for every responder to have overlooked. EVERY support model for ANYTHING on the computer (even on your mouse) calls out it's own connection to ask "hey am I registered? Do I need updates?" etc. So there is MANY MANY connections (without being overly technical) occurring just 'using' a PC because it is ALOT CHEAPER to support automated programs then to have people sitting around 24x7 waiting for your phone call "do I need to register, so where is my update" etc.

That said, ALL RESPONDENTS completely ignored that even LEGITIMATE WEBSITES GET INFECTED / HACKED. Never you mind about Worms still existing which have NOTHING TO DO WITH PIRATING OR PORN but exist just to replicate themselves over and over and over by 'crawling' from one IP to another trying to find someplace to 'replicate' over again.

Antivirus is REQUIRED to keep your system from being infected, and NO MSE IS NOT SECURE ENOUGH, in fact EVERY testing series says the same thing, MSE should be replaced IMMEDIATELY as it does NOT provide even BASIC security for the system. There is PLENTY of FREE Antivirus out there, like Panda, Commodo, or Avira which is rated one of the top AV out there. www.filehippo.com has the latest editions quick to download and is a clean website.

That does NOT protect you from MALWARE, which is the difference between getting 'sick' and seeing a 'Doctor' and being constantly send email/mail/phone calls to 'buy our product!" sales people. Malware doesn't' necessarily change or threaten a PC so AV can't "see it", it instead presents things that FOOL you to believing there is a problem "YOUR WINDOWS IS INFECTED CLICK HERE TO UPDATE TO ANTIVIRUS2015!". Your actions cause the problems, and the only way to 'find and remove these' which can easily be passed through a toolbar, a added Chrome app, or anything else, is to you Malwarebytes, Spybot and others out there and run a scan every week to every month (automatic scans like AV are only for 'subscribed' versions not free versions of the software).

Windows defender is sufficient for daily use. But an anti virus and anti amlware is good to have. Thats just ridiculous.

First off, Steam OS / Linux is limited on the number of titles (100 I believe Steam officially said and like 90 of those are 'independent' titles, aka no Wolfenstein, BattleField, Skyrim, etc. ).

Second STEAM OS works like the Google ChromeCast, you have your 'game PC' download the Steam Game, then 'run it', then it 'broadcasts' that gaming 'screen' and the inputs (using a controller) from your big screen TV that the steambox is connected to. There is no 'Steam games' on a SteamOS/Box honestly as most people are misunderstood.

Again though, it isn't just the 'game' playing, your making a connection to another system (nothing to do with the game) to 'talk' just like you 'call' another phone number and it isn't just the other 'phone' involved, there is all the cell towers and telephone computer equipment 'in between' to make the connection. ANYWHERE in those connections any of those systems in ANY WAY before you even say a 'word' can be infecting each other, and as I noted in my other post, NOTHING TO DO WITH PORN OR PIRATING. The BIOS one for example is all hardware attacking, nothing to do with the 'game' itself, but just trying to make the 'connection' between your piece of hardware all the way to where the game needs to connect to play 'other players' out there and when they 'talk' that I am IP 175.245.13.98 using TCP and want Port 54321 for this application (game) to talk to you, BOOM that is a point when the masquerade occurs and tries to push down the code to infect you.

Yah but that is worst case scenario i have played literally thousands of online games on many diffrent games and i have NEVER gotten a virus so yes its possible but extremely unlikely.

What is ridiculous? What I said? Really? Then did you BOTHER to read the official first couple links which as I pointed out has nothing to do with ANYTHING you / other said would be 'how' you get infected? When OP uses his little brother's thumb drive, OR as the nasty BIOS ones does, or have you EVEN BOTHERED to read how STUXNET got to the Iranian Centrifuges on ultra military grade secure systems with NO external connections at all? Not even remotely 'easy' as the OP's personal computer just plugged into the Internet, yet wow they got taken down.

Further as I said legit websites:
http://www.symantec.com/threatreport/topic.jsp?id=threat_activity_trends&aid=analysis_of_website_categories
http://www.webroot.com/blog/2013/01/22/android-malware-spreads-through-compromised-legitimate-web-sites/
(( Ohh look ANDROID not even WINDOWS...))
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125398-Malware-Infections-Are-Usually-From-Legitimate-Websites

Worst part is your even 'agreeing' "an anti virus and anti amlware is good to have" - as though they were 'luxuries' that aren't really needed but 'nice to have'. If a lock on your car is essential, if a lock on your front door is essential, when why in the world would you say "an anti virus and anti amlware is (just) good to have"?

STOP. PLEASE READ MY WORDS:

"There is PLENTY of FREE Antivirus out there, like Panda, Commodo, or Avira which is rated one of the top AV out there. www.filehippo.com has the latest editions quick to download and is a clean website"

"Malwarebytes, Spybot and others out there and run a scan every week to every month (automatic scans like AV are only for 'subscribed' versions not free versions of the software). "

Please STOP TLDR, and actually READ the words I am posting here before you make another INACCURATE assertive statement. Further I am not just 'posting for my EGO', I am providing LEGITIMATE (note not 'blog opinions') MULTIPLE DIFFERENT sources to substantiate what I am saying. So it isn't just me spewing posts.

You and the others are giving BAD advice. I can't count the number of people I had to 'fix' whom said " i have played literally thousands of online games on many different games and i have NEVER gotten a virus" before but because they really either A) didn't' want to be bothered B) didnt' REALLY honestly understand what a Virus or MALWARE (note this is different as I posted the difference, please go back and reread it as malware is the normal 'infection' at this point) works and was actually doing to those systems the person 'ignored' and 'WORKED AROUND THE PROBLEM'.

Im not gonna argue with you your getting way to serious. Windows defender is sufficient for gaming and not doing anything crazy and i will stand by that.

UHmm? You apparently aren't 'serious' with your advice then? THIS FORUM IS TO SOLVE REAL PROBLEMS, not spew opinion for 'fun', want that make a blog and do it there. YES I am serious when I give ADVICE, because I expect the OP/whomever to be following it, and that I don't find it 'fun' to give BAD / WRONG Advice that screws the person over.
