Looking for a cheap laptop (< $500) that can maybe do some word processing, and maybe a slight amount of gaming? Please note that I'm not asking for a Skyrim laptop, I mean maybe MineCraft or Terraria.

I mostly just want it for college, and some computer programming classes. I tried to search on Amazon, but there is no filter that says "Backlit Keyboard". Haha

Best Buy has this one on sale for $500 if you can find it in stock. They are sold out in my area. It's a clearance item (meaning last year's model). Great price for a former nearly $700 laptop

Here's a Dell for $490 at Amazon (but has a lower grade i3 chip instead of the above HP's i5 chip).

You really are going to have a hard time finding one for under $500 with a backlit keyboard. That option is usually reserved for the mid and upper priced laptops....not low end ones. Also not sure if it matters, but neither of these laptops have DVD drives (I haven't used the ones in my laptops in years).

I was looking into getting a Toshiba Chromebook 2, but after installing Windows on it, I'm concerned that it might not run very fast. Is there any cheaper options available. Any suggestions?

Sorry. I see none. I would not recommend a Chromebook because they do not support a lot of plug-in apps like Silverlight. Plus they are not good for anything more than basic web browsing and MS Office apps. Your only bet is to possibly find a refurb or used notebook with a backlit keyboard.
