Any potential harm to unlock my phone?

Hi, I am debating whether or not to unlock my brand new Nokia 6610 I
got from T-mobile. I have signed a one-year service agreement.

If I choose to unlock the phone right now, is there any harm? Would
my phone still operate properly with the current T-mobile plan? Don't
ask me why I want to do it;) I am just the kind of guy who likes to
fool around.

I have downloaded several unlocking programs. They all seem pretty
easy to use so I am tempted!

Thanks,
James
