This is utter bullcrap. Google Maps had public transit navigation in version 6! The interface looked almost exactly like the second picture on the right. They removed it for no real reason, and I have been hoping they would re-integrate the feature for a year now. Apple should definitely not be able to patent such a thing, as it most definitely has been done before!
