[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]Oddly enough the patent office doesn't hand out it's patents on the basis of them being good ideas, only that they are original. That's why I would probably get a patent issues for a device that attaches to the feet of a ladder that excretes oil, allowing the climber to have the ladder slip from underneath him and break his neck. A really stupid idea but original.[/citation]

Actually, I hold the patent for that one. It's actually a pretty good seller; very popular with attorneys.

I have to say... as an employee who works in the call center for the repair center for a large (non-Apple) smartphone manufacturer I actually think this is a great idea. I do see the potential for misuse by the manufacturer. But I also see that it could stifle a good deal of the "but I treat my phone like my baby" arguments.

There are two facts that we can all admit: 1. A lot of people abuse their phones. 2. A lot of people miraculously get amnesia when they break their stuff. This technology could put an end to this. You don't know how your screen broke? Could it have happened when you dropped your phone on August 3, 2009 at 9:37:56 AM? That's a powerful tool, and a useful one if used correctly.

Just because a company tries to protect its interests doesn't make that company evil. Even a generally pretentious and over-priced company like Apple. If a consumer does something to void their warranty they deserve to have their warranty claim denied. I see it day in and day out with various models of phones... and we're made out to be the bad guys because we deny a warranty claim for a broken LCD. We protect our interests and are right in doing so. Apple, as evil as they may be, is no different.

[citation][nom]GenKhan2[/nom]$5 says taking you brand new purchase home from the store, opening it's packaging, or turning it on will result in an "abuse" flag for some customers.[/citation]

Considering the crap you have to do nowadays to get stuff out of that horrible plastic packaging, It will probably record 30 minutes of abuse before you even get to the item :p

Here is an old(ish) link, showing Apple G5's being unloaded at a dock somewhere at Microsoft campus, back in Nov 2003. Look at the back of the truck... Might even wanna read the article while at it, fairly funny

[citation][nom]lowguppy[/nom]Well, in that case its your car insurance and GAP coverage that will pay for it, not the manufacturer. Do we need Gadget insurance now?[/citation]

oh i bet your ass apple will start offering 'gadget" insurance as well just another way for them to rip more money from the ill informed folks pockets.

[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]We are not stupid, we totally understand why a company want to put this technology inside, the motives however are insidious, sneaky and open to wide-spread abuse. The onus is now being placed on the consumer to prove innocence rather than the manufacturer proving guilt. It is the technological equivalent of removing the right of "presumed innocence".[/citation]

yes my thought's exactly this is just the kind of intrusive "big brother" activities that many companieas are pulling these day , i stilkeep askign "when is the goverment (or any oen ) going tos tep ina nd say enough is enough. these companies are runnign rampant and its gettign back to teh days where they see consumers as nothing more than a resource to be controlled and or exploited.

No, but it's not an original idea was my point. They hand out patents that have been covered and are in current use. How can you patent something that is already currently being used? You can't... well, not supposed to be able to (I mean, they will approve it until someone complains at least). Original ideas are one thing, but patenting something that's been done many times is another.

There's not much difference between MS and Apple. They both abuse their customers and offer nothing in exchange.

[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]I think Apple needs to release a bit of Anti-Microsoft propaganda, to help defuse the attention they are getting. Rather than improve their own image they should smear the competition, it's what the do best and have always done.My guess is they will accuse MS of having a secret program built into Windows 7 that taps into your webcam and spies on you when you watch internet porn. C'mon, roll out the smears!!![/citation]
