Apps Not Responding

Hello, so I've been getting this "checking disk" messages when booting the Laptop, when I waited for it (instead of click on the 'click any button to continue without checking disk') nothing happens. I leave the laptop but nothing happens. Then I realized that something is wrong when I try to play videos or games, it says 'not responding', then suddenly the wifi wouldn't connect, and when I tries to check the specs, RAM and Processor bar says n/a or Not Available. What should I do?

Backup important files immediately in case the harddrive is about to fail.
next boot from a utilities disk or flash drive, such as Hirens boot disk, and use a utility to check the drives SMART status.
