Hey guys

I just recently bought my wife a new laptop at our local Best Buy hoping for the best. She wanted a smaller, lightweight laptop that could play most games at a decent framerate, operate photoshop, and do photo editing with ease. I was guided to the Asus Model: X83Vb-X2, here is the link -

So far it seems to run World of Warcraft at about 40fps or higher with most of the settings turned all the way up. Vista seems to run pretty smoothly but for some reason Vista makes me feel like it doesnt work as well as XP, but anyways. I was curious since it seemed to get a lot of negative reviews if you guys felt it was a laptop worth keeping for my wifes needs. For $650 it seemed hard to find a laptop with a 512mg nvidia card and 4gigs of ram and the salesman at Best Buy said it was a great deal for the performance. I have 4 days left to return it and I am not sure if I should. The keyboard seems to be a little unresponsive at times, they are hard to see in low light. The internet seems to drop a lot of the time even when I am in the same room as my wireless router! (Any ideas about this?)!!! And also can you wipe Vista off these preinstalled laptops and install XP? Would you recomend that anyways?

Anyways, thank you so much for your time guys. I saved up all my overtime money for several months to buy my wife a laptop, and I just want to make sure it is worth it. Thanks

Chris

for $650 I'd say that's a pretty good deal. The 9300 isn't a breakneck fast card but it'll do that job for WoW. Much as I hate to admit it the sales guy is right though for $650 it's got probably the best performance for the money. As for the wireless issue I'd first check if the wireless antennas are loose from the card. As for the unresponsive keyboard that may simply be a driver issue I don't know. You can easily wipe Vista off the one caveat is that unless you run 64 bit XP it will never be able to see all 4GB of ram that's there. for $650 I'd check over everything if there are any problems go exchange it and see if that does it if the same problems still exist it's probably something else and you will have to decide whether it's worth it to live with the few small problems for the great price.

It's not a bad deal, though I wouldn't call it a gamer.

You could instal XP on it if you really wanted to, but most manufacturers who release these systems with Vista don't release drivers for them in XP. You'd have to go out and find the device drivers on your own and that can be a pain.

Honestly, I run an XP system and a Vista SP1 system side by side and I can say I like Vista just as much as XP. Maybe it's just me though.

Ya, this isnt a bad laptop at all. Tell you the truth, it came down to this one and the other ASUS laptop that best buy has. I ended up going with the G50Vt-X5 (which is great btw) But i bought the X83Vb-X2 first, because i wanted something a little bit smaller than a 16 incher. Played around with it for a week or so. Great laptop, good graphics card, and decent battery life for the price, but i finally decided that i wanted something more.

so i went back returned that one, and got the G50. Biggest difference (besides the $150 pricetag diff.) is a much better GPU, but terrible battery life (bout an hour and a half) For WoW and lite photoshopping, the X83Vb-X2 is pretty much the best deal your gonna get, though i would return it and get a new one, i have heard of problems with that model, though nothing killer. As for XP, ya, you could go out and spend $150 bucks on it, but like lostandwandering said, you'd have to go and get all those drivers yourself. or you could just wait for windows 7, idk, its all up to you.
