Asus laptop won't stay on without being plugged in

My Asus only works if it's plugged in. When I unplug it, it shuts off immediately. Do I need a new battery?

Yeah it sounds like it, the only other thing is that the daughter board responcible for charging the battery could have gone aswell.

when it is plugged in, what does it say about the battery? you should have a battery icon in lower right, it should give you % charged.
how old is the laptop? batteries deteriorate over time, it's not uncommon for a battery that once powered a laptop for 2 hours when new to barely hold out for 30 minutes 5 years later.
replacement batteries aren't cheap, best to make sure it is indeed a dead battery before throwing money at buying a new one.

If you have your battery in and it is connected to the charger, the laptop should be able to sense if the battery is in or not. It can tell you if it is charging too. Just look at the indicator to the bottom right of the screen. Batteries will die eventually, but you will usually notice a gradual change in performance over time.
