Asus p50ij will not turn on, no lights when plugged in either

I recently received a laptop from my god mother who told me that if I can fix it I can have it. She told me that there was a "black screen of death" and that it wouldn't turn back on after that. When I plug it in to the charger, no lights come on to indicate that it is charging. I have tried holding the power button for 30 seconds and up to 3 minutes with the battery out but plugged in, battery in but not plugged in, battery in and plugged in, and no battery or charger, but none of these did anything. Is there anything I could do to figure out what's wrong with it before I even go to a shop and get it checked out?

Have you tried another charger cord on it, and also another battery? Those are what I would start with.
