ATH-M40x - Are they really worth?

I'm just about to get the M40x's as I'm producing music and my music sounds bad on other's speakers etc as I'm working with a $20 headphones (mixing and mastering problems)

The M40x's are said to deliver a "weak bass" experience (well we call it flat), can you confirm ?

Do I need an amplifier to go with?
Will be used as main headphones on the rear (green) jack of a PC (motherboard stock soundcard).

Should I get another headphones instead for the M40x's?

i've heard the m30 and m50 but not the m40. from what i've heard about it they say its more neutral than the others but i cant confirm that from hearing it myself. honestly the best thing to do is to hear headphones in person to see if you like their signature or not.

if you want neutral cans i can say that the hd518/558/598 are fairly neutral, the dt880 is somewhat neutral and many akg cans are as well. i believe the k7xx is on massdrop right now (k712 for cheaper)

in many cases you wouldnt need an amp for the at's or senns. you might be fine without an amp for akgs but that depends on your onboard. you can always add an amp or soundcard later if needed.
