audio booster

i need an application that will boost the audio windows puts to the sound card. i have the audio all the way up but i still cant hear some dvds when there is quiet conversation.

You know.. I have that same problem. first I thought it was my speakers, so I switched them out with some 5.1 surround that I have hooked to my tv.. that didn'thelp.. so I changed drivers.. that didn't help..

Then again, what is the dB range on your speakers? They might not be able to play those sounds well..

And how many speakers? I have a 2 speaker setup right now, but it did sound a somewhat better on a 4 speaker w/ sub.

its not my speakers, this is with headphones. the audio is loud when playing mp3s, and windows event audio is loud, just the dvd volume played through windows media player is always very quiet when there is no action. i wonder if there is a separate audio control controled by the dvd decoder some how?

Windows Media player and most other media players have a volume adjustment seperate of the sound card.

trust me, this is not a simple case of not looking at the volume control right in front of me. its not even a problem at all. dvd just have a very low volume at certain parts of the movie for effect. without powered speakers its not loud enough.

Odd...could it be the response capabilities of your headphones? Have you tried some others? Can you EQ the sound before it reaches your phones?

I spent nearly seven months watching DVDs on my laptop with headphones and did not experience anything like what you're talking about.

Headphones are easier to use with DVDs than with speakers.. he probably has 2 satellite speakers that connect into the sound card. I had the same thing when I watching a DVD. If I switched out my speakers to powered ones, they played better.

I'd bet the speakers can't handle it with low power.. which is why he wants to boost the audio portion, not power to the speakers.

What type of headphones do you currently use? I've basically gave up on passive headphones a few years ago and use powered headphones now. They seem to make a huge difference. just some cheap headphones, it is NOT an issue with response with certain frequencies, they are loud when other samples are playing, dvds generaly are much quieter than other sounds on a computer. some movies have very quiet dialogue and i need a way to boost the sound.

Get a set with an inline volume control. Set it down low and then crank up your software to where you like it for the normal parts...when the quiet parts come crank up the inline volume...

go back and read the post again. my problem is not that i have to keep changing the audio volume. the problem is that max volume every where there are parts of dvd audio tracks that are too quiet! btw, i have a set with inline volume control.

You know what.. what kind of audio connection do you have going from your DVD-ROM to your Sound card?
I know there is the digital and the regular.. SPIF or whatever.

Any chance of going the digital route on that one?

Just a thought.. not something we think about too much..

nah, its my work computer and they wouldnt like it too much if they saw me digging around inside the thing. plus is an hp, i dont want to take it apart. and i believe the connector from the cd rom to the sound card is for audio cds only, dvds dont apply here since its compressed audio.

What sound card is in the system? Onboard or PCI?

My only other thought we be that it's not a good enough card to really deal with it.

I did a search for any kind of software audio enhancement, but I didn't find anything worthwhile.

not supposed to of course but i do anyway. i usually watch an episode of star trek at lunch, then toward the end of the day on fridays and thursdsays its so slow i dont have anything to do so i just watch a movie. no one seems to care. its an onboard sound card.

Your profile says you do lan administration.. and you can't go opening your PC?

I used to have problems with onboard sound not playing right at times.. it would sound distant at times.. but that was always constant.

I wonder if the onboard sound card isn't able to do select sounds.. not sure of any programs out there that test that.. the only thing I could say would by pop in another sound card.. but that's probably out of the question.

I looked again and I didn't see any audio boosters.. I only could find stuff to boost mp3 music.. like coolwave and audio editing programs.

Talk about fresh ideas.. I was hired in at my company because of my Active Directory, Server and Windows support background.

They've allowed me one thing so far in 8 months.. which is repackaging software to an MSI format for easier installs.

I guess computer imaging, a domain, DNS, AD replication and creating less user accounts for each person hasn't been a good enough yet!
