Audio Optical SPDIF

Hi I have my PC linked to a Samsung HT 5500 5.1 Surround Sound unit. I have the PC hooked to the TV via HDMI and the Surround Sound hooked to the PC via 3.5mm to RCA splitter but I am not getting the 5.1 surround sound. Its only using two speakers. Now if I used a Optical SPDIF cable from my pc to my surround sound, would that use all 5 speakers and give me 5.1 surround sound?

Yes, if you go from your PC to the Samsung with a Toslink optical SPDIF cable like THIS ONE you can use the Samsung 5.1 surround sound. You have to make the Tosklink the default sound output and set the Samsung to 5.1 surround.
