Audio options in Vista

When I first installed vista I did the average thing most people would do, Install the most up to date drivers for your computer. I installed my realtek audio drivers for my Asus P5E3 Deluxe and noticed when I went to my sound manager that I was only able to select 2channel audio. After uninstalling my audio drivers I just let vista update the audio and now I have fully working 5.1 surround sound. Happy story, but the problem is the config only works for my speakers option and that only runs audio with the green jack in the back this is a problem to me because I use SPDIF.

In short the question is is there a way to run SPDIF in surround on vista?

If no one can help with the above question perhaps you could help me on something a little more simple. I would appreciate a small guide to select what options to run in ffdshow audio decoder and AC3 for 5.1 surround. My media player I use is VLC.

I only use SPDIF through optical and I use the built in realtek on my motherboard. For me to turn on surround sound for it, I have to right click the brown speaker at the bottom right of the screen. There should be 2 speakers the white speaker is the one Vista should have on every computer the other should be the Realtek HD Audio manager which is probably hidden. After you right click it a menu should pop up. You then click audio devices. That opens up a window that should already be on the playback tab. You should two items on that tab. The first says speakers and on my system is inactive since I don't have anything attached to it. The other should say Realtek Digital Output. Click the digital output and then click properties towards the bottom of the window. That will open another window which should allow you to turn on 5.1 SPDIF. You either need to click the Dolby tab or the advanced tab which should have an option for surround sound. After you have set it to surround you might want to make sure the first window you have opened is set so that the digital output is activated. This is how I turn on my surround sound but unfortunately my receiver which is designed for surround sound won't play anything in surround sound. I think I got the Realtek HD Audio drivers with my motherboards disc so maybe that will help.
