Auto text alignment

I am working in Microsoft Word 2013. I am trying to make a line of text center aligned, but it makes all the text above it centered aligned as well. I have turned off all the automatic formating, and it's still doing this. Can anyone help me? ASAP? I'm at work and trying to get a contract done.

Highlight select the text you want centered and then apply the formatting. This will change formatting only for the text that is selected rather than for the entire document.

That doesn't work, it still changes that. I am very proficient at Word, and this is throwing me for a loop.

Insert a hard line break (just press <Enter>) before that line.
