Here you may see it has already created 344 copies of itself in memory. And this process is infinite until the system renders totally unresponsive.

I think there is something else going on with how you have this set up, I had an issue with Avast + Windows 10 (caused by the Windows 10 upgrade) on a work computer, so I used my home computer to test out how AVG was working and never switched it back to avast (because I'm being lazy about it)... I have had AVG on my main computer for 7ish months and I don't have that issue

This happens with their free AVG version. An update process spawns itself again and again and, finally, freezes the computer.

I have the free version on one of my computers, and I don't have this issue. I'm wondering if there is something else going on

That's why I say "avoid at all costs". It is written "free". That does mean that no one should pay their time, nerves, and computer resources for their crap promotions.
