Benefits of unlocked phones

What are the benefits of buying an unlocked mobile phone, if you have to pay so much more than you would under a two year contract?

1) many carriers dont have the phone that some people are looking for
2) some people dont want to wait that long for a new phone if they break theirs or just want a new one
