I am thinking about buying a very powerful 17'' laptop to be used as a desktop replacement, so it would be used for gaming a lot as well.

Afaik, the best brands on the market in this field are Alienware, XMG, MSI and Razer. Which of them would you suggest? I am also interested in the quality of customer service, of tech support etc (especially because I have read many horror stories about Alienware laptops).

So far it looks to me that XMG has the most powerful computers with a very good price, but I personally don't know them. MSI has some very light and portable laptops, like Razer (although these seem a bit too overpriced and probably not very upgradeable).

Now, since a laptop like this should last for several years, what would you suggest?

Thanks!

MSI & ASUS make some great ones. Since you didn't mention your budget, I assume you're aiming for under 2000$.

2 great laptops are:

MSI GS70 2OD-001US

ASUS G75 Series G750JX-DB71

RazerBlades are very slim but they don't offer you Value for money.

For the similar performance as the MSI I've mentioned, you'll have to spend 1000$ more for Razer Blade:

Razer Blade Pro RZ09-00991101-R3U1

Thanks for these! Yeah, I thought the same thing about the Razers, they are cool but too pricey for what they offer.

My budget is around £2000, so if you have any other suggestions around this price those could come in handy :)

I just ordered a lappy from Cyberpower close to the above Asus, but minus the SSD but with an Intel i7 4700mq. I paid $1375 and have yet to receive it. I only play Flight Simulator 9 & 10 and didn't want spend a lot of money after dropping $2800 on a desktop, but I wanted the portability to use it on our balcony. If this happy is half as good as the desktop I bought firm them 10 years ago, I'll be quite happy. I would suggest taking a look at Cyberpower's Fangbooks for another possibility.

Sorry for the ignorance, but what makes it better than the others? Is it just the fans?

Yeah, otherwise it's the heaviest and bulkiest with a screen that's decent.
